When you talk to Mateen J. about music, it quickly becomes clear: This artist feels music with all his heart. In our interview he describes, that he has been at the piano for over 20 years now and nowadays mostly produces jazz ambient and chillout. Mateen J. has released his EP ‚Balcony Sessions‘ on White Rooms Records, which you can download on Bandcamp, but also on all common shops.

Hey Mateen, welcome to the Interview! Who are you? Tell us something about yourself!
Hello, I’m Mateen Jahanmiry and I’ve been at it on the piano for over 20 years.  I’ve performed extensively around the central Florida area.  From a young age I was quite ambitious in my approach and went as far as opening for one of my favorite bands, The Bad Plus.  I approach the piano openly and with an enjoyable ambient style.  I also cook, mountain bike and am a programmer using Python as my preferred language.  My background is Iranian.

How did you get into music? And who or what inspired you to make music yourself? Do you admire other famous musicians or producers?
My mother initiated my piano journey when I was 12 years old.  I was classically trained and played classical music for about 3 years until I parted ways with it and started to improvise in my spare time.  I then came across jazz music when I was 15 and that’s when I began to seriously improvise and jam along with records and I began learning jazz standards.  Those jazz records I would jam to include Brad Mehldau, Charlie Hunter, Medeski Martin & Wood & others and my family members also inspired me to create and enjoyed listening to my music.  I marvel at DJ Shadow, Keith Jarrett, Tycho and other electronic artists like Aphex Twin.

Do you produce music as full-time job? Tell us about your everyday life. If not, what is your everyday life like? How can music production be integrated into your everyday life?
I don’t produce music as a full-time job.  Up until recently I was facilitating financial services for a company called Blue Star Leads where I would ask various businesses who their fund manager is, essentially doing surveys.  It was good because I was working from home but now I’m taking a break and working more on music.  Not quite full time but I do it for about an hour a day, mostly focusing on the piano.  Production is something I got into in the year of 2013 when I dropped out of medical school to produce electronic music.  I view music like being inspired by your surroundings and nature to create.  Creating harmonies that tell stories so by going on walks everyday and drawing from my environment, I feel like I can integrate music into my everyday life in that fashion.

How would you describe the music you produce? Has your style changed before?
The music I design is ambient, jazzy and has chillout elements to it.  Ambient music is fun to create because it’s so relaxing but the process is so incredibly engaging and active.  Combining sounds to conceive music and incorporating various monophonic and polyphonic synths with earthy drum tones is the nature of the game for me.  My style hasn’t quite changed but matured with time and time will only tell how I will evolve in the coming years.

Can you tell us what your creative process looks like? Which tools (software, hardware) do you use?
I use the M-Audio Keystation 88 MK3 on a 2020 MacBook Pro with Logic Pro X.  The e. piano is at the heart of what I do along with grand piano timbres.  I usually record extended e. piano or piano lines and then cut small portions out, loop them alongside electronic or acoustic bass and electronic or acoustic drums.

What was your biggest success so far or is there a special moment in your music career that still makes you smile today?
My biggest success was probably opening for The Bad Plus in 2008 at the Social in Orlando.  There was one special moment where I broke out in tears during a piano guild because I couldn’t perform the rest of the piece but I got some motivation from my piano teacher to complete the recital and I sat down and finished the piece flawlessly.  It was special because it showed the power of perseverance in your work.

Do you have a mantra Or was there any good advice that was given to you along the way?
Forget the day’s troubles, remember the day’s blessings.  I was given plenty of good advice, like the acquisition of balance in one’s life between excesses and deficiencies as in things you do too much of or too little of in your life that lead to an imbalanced perspective.  Whatever you do, think about the consequence of your actions, every choice that we make has a consequence and make positive choices in my life.  Also try to give back.

Creativity has ups and downs. How do you deal with it? Are there phases in which you are particularly productive? And how do you motivate yourself? Do you have any tips for others?
Creativity does have ups and downs.  It boils down to practice and persistence.  Just continue to persevere in your craft and you’ll succeed.  I notice that midday I’m particularly productive.  I motivate myself by staying focused and being on alert and remaining aware of my surroundings.  My tips to others are don’t give up, take days off if it gets tough but stay on the right path and don’t be lead astray by negative energies.

What’s next for you?
Next for me is a step-up in production and piano gigs.  Due to covid I was restricted from gigging for a while but now that things have loosened up I’m ready to start gigging and performing again.  I’m looking forward to this upcoming year as I’m planning on producing some promising new titles and expanding my genre a bit to include post-bop and more fusion.

Hallo, ich bin Mateen Jahanmiry und bin seit über 20 Jahren am Klavier dabei. Ich habe ausgiebig in Zentral-Florida gespielt. Schon in jungen Jahren war ich ziemlich ehrgeizig in meiner Herangehensweise und ging sogar so weit, für eine meiner Lieblingsbands, The Bad Plus, zu eröffnen. Ich nähere mich dem Klavier offen und mit einem angenehmen Ambient-Stil. Ich koche auch, fahre Mountainbike und bin Programmierer mit Python als meiner bevorzugten Sprache. Wie bist du zur Musik gekommen? Und wer oder was hat dich inspiriert, selbst Musik zu machen? Bewunderst du andere berühmte Musiker oder Produzenten?
Meine Mutter begann meine Klavierreise, als ich 12 Jahre alt war. Ich wurde klassisch ausgebildet und spielte ca. 3 Jahre klassische Musik, bis ich mich davon trennte und in meiner Freizeit zu improvisieren begann. Als ich 15 war, bin ich dann auf Jazzmusik gestoßen und habe angefangen, ernsthaft zu improvisieren und zusammen mit Platten zu jammen und ich habe angefangen, Jazzstandards zu lernen. Diese Jazz-Platten, die ich mit Brad Mehldau, Charlie Hunter, Medeski Martin & Wood & anderen und meinen Familienmitgliedern jammen würde, inspirierten mich auch, meine Musik zu kreieren und genoss es, meine Musik zu hören. Ich bewundere DJ Shadow, Keith Jarrett, Tycho und andere elektronische Künstler wie Aphex Twin.

Machst du hauptberuflich Musik? Erzähl uns von deinem Alltag. Falls nicht, wie sieht dein Alltag aus? Wie lässt sich Musikproduktion in deinen Alltag integrieren?
Ich produziere Musik nicht als Vollzeitjob. Bis vor kurzem war ich im Bereich Finanzdienstleistungen für ein Unternehmen namens Blue Star Leads tätig, bei dem ich verschiedene Unternehmen nach ihrem Fondsmanager fragte und im Wesentlichen Umfragen durchführte. Es war gut, weil ich von zu Hause aus gearbeitet habe, aber jetzt mache ich eine Pause und arbeite mehr an der Musik. Es ist nicht ganz Vollzeit, aber ich mache das ungefähr eine Stunde am Tag und konzentriere mich hauptsächlich auf das Klavier. In die Produktion kam ich im Jahr 2013, als ich mein Medizinstudium abbrach, um elektronische Musik zu produzieren. Ich mache Musik während ich inspiriert werde von meiner Umgebung und der Natur. Durch das Schaffen von Harmonien, die Geschichten erzählen, habe ich das Gefühl, dass ich durch tägliche Spaziergänge und das Aufzeichnen meiner Umgebung auf diese Weise Musik in meinen Alltag integrieren kann.

Wie würdest du die Musik beschreiben, die du produzierst? Hat sich dein Stil schon einmal verändert?
Die Musik, die ich entwerfe, ist ambient, jazzig und hat Chillout-Elemente. Es macht Spaß, Ambient-Musik zu kreieren, weil sie so entspannend ist, aber der Prozess ist so unglaublich einnehmend und aktiv. Klänge zu kombinieren, um Musik zu konzipieren und verschiedene monophone und polyphone Synthesizer mit erdigen Schlagzeugklängen zu kombinieren, ist für mich die Natur des Spiels. Mein Stil hat sich nicht ganz verändert, aber mit der Zeit gereift und die Zeit wird nur zeigen, wie ich mich in den kommenden Jahren weiterentwickeln werde.

Verrätst du uns, wie dein kreativer Prozessablauf aussieht? Welche Tools (Software, Hardware) nutzt du?
Ich verwende die M-Audio Keystation 88 MK3 auf einem 2020 MacBook Pro mit Logic Pro X. Das e-Klavier ist das Herzstück meiner Arbeit, zusammen mit den Klangfarben des Flügels. Normalerweise zeichne ich erweiterte e-Piano- oder Piano-Linien auf und schneide Sie dann in kleinen Stücken aus, loope Sie sie neben elektronischen oder akustischen Bässen und elektronischen oder akustischen Schlagzeugen.

Was war dein größter Erfolg bislang oder gibt es einen besonderen Moment in deiner Musikkarriere, der dich heute immer noch zum Lächeln bringt?
Mein größter Erfolg war wahrscheinlich die Eröffnung von The Bad Plus im Jahr 2008 beim Social in Orlando. Es gab einen besonderen Moment, in dem ich während einer Klaviergilde in Tränen ausbrach, weil ich den Rest des Stücks nicht aufführen konnte, aber ich bekam von meinem Klavierlehrer etwas Motivation, das Konzert zu beenden, und ich setzte mich hin und beendete das Stück fehlerfrei. Es war besonders, weil es die Kraft der Ausdauer in Ihrer Arbeit zeigte.

Hast du ein Mantra? Oder gab es mal einen besonders guten Ratschlag, der dir mit auf den Weg gegeben wurde?
Vergessen Sie die Sorgen des Tages, erinnern Sie sich an die Segnungen des Tages. Ich habe viele gute Ratschläge bekommen, wie zum Beispiel die Balance im Leben zwischen Exzessen und Defiziten zu finden, wie bei Dingen, die man in seinem Leben zu viel oder zu wenig tut, die zu einer unausgeglichenen Perspektive führen. Was auch immer Sie tun, denken Sie über die Konsequenzen Ihres Handelns nach, jede Entscheidung, die wir treffen, hat eine Konsequenz und treffe positive Entscheidungen in meinem Leben. Versuchen Sie auch, etwas zurückzugeben.

Kreativität kennt Höhen und Tiefen. Wie gehst du damit um? Gibt es Phasen, in denen du besonders produktiv bist? Und wie motivierst du dich? Hast du Tipps für andere?
Kreativität hat Höhen und Tiefen. Es kommt auf Übung und Ausdauer an. Bleiben Sie einfach in Ihrem Handwerk beharrlich und Sie werden Erfolg haben. Ich merke, dass ich mittags besonders produktiv bin. Ich motiviere mich, indem ich konzentriert bleibe und wachsam bin und mir meiner Umgebung bewusst bin. Meine Tipps an andere sind, nicht aufzugeben, sich freie Tage zu nehmen, wenn es schwierig wird, aber auf dem richtigen Weg zu bleiben und sich nicht von negativen Wesenheiten in die Irre führen zu lassen.

Was steht als nächstes bei dir an?
Als nächstes kommt für mich ein Step-Up in der Produktion und bei Piano-Gigs. Aufgrund von Covid war ich eine Zeit lang nicht auf Gigs beschränkt, aber jetzt, da sich die Dinge gelockert haben, bin ich bereit, wieder aufzutreten und aufzutreten. Ich freue mich auf das kommende Jahr, da ich plane, einige vielversprechende neue Titel zu produzieren und mein Genre ein wenig um Post-Bop und mehr Fusion zu erweitern.
